Perry is the daughter of actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. One of her first TV appearances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother played her role. She did not consider a career in acting until after she had reached adulthood, as her parents were afraid of the negative consequences stress can be a cause of. Perry confessed that she wasn't comfortable acting in high school. She began doing it to make friends in Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry was a graduate of Boston University, moved into New York in search of television roles. Her small part was in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, homesickness led her to California for theater roles. She appeared on Broadway with her mother in The Other Place with her mother in 2013. In 2015, she was a part of her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Anna Christie in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. In the year 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes on ABC's drama The Family. In 2017, Perry had the role of a political thriller Scandal with her father. The same year the actress was selected to play a young character of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again portraying a younger version of her mother's. The actress was chosen for the role despite having a close family connection to the character.
