The actress was born in Arizona, US she grew to be a teenager in the Philippines and then returned to California which is where her family moved to. In her teens, she was able to start appearing in stage productions for local theater companies. Seth Riggs became her vocal coach through a scholarship in 1993. Leal received praise for her roles in the films This Christmas Soul Man Why Did I get Married? and Why Did I Also Get Married? Additionally, she has appeared on stage in many productions. In January 2004, she was named the "Celebrity Beautiful of the Month" in the publication Ebony. Leal is married with Bev Land, who is a filmmaker. They have one son. Presently, she is in a relationship with director-choreographer Paul Becker.
